Robert of Molesme

c. 1028–1111 · 11th century

Robert of Molesme was a French monk who founded the abbey of Molesme in 1075 and then, seeking a stricter life, the New Monastery of Cîteaux in 1098. Ordered by the pope to return to Molesme in 1099, he left Cîteaux to Alberic and Stephen Harding, who shaped the Cistercian order. He was canonised in 1222 and is honoured as one of the order's founders.
