Romanus (comes Africae)

fl. 363–373 · 4th century

Romanus was the Roman military count (comes Africae) of the African provinces under Valentinian I. When the Austuriani raided the countryside of Leptis and Oea in the 360s, he refused to act unless the cities supplied him with provisions and thousands of camels, and later used his court connections to cover up the scandal. Ammianus Marcellinus records his corruption, which also helped provoke the revolt of Firmus in Mauretania in the 370s.
