Synesius

c. 373–c. 414 · 4th century · Also known as Synesius of Cyrene, Synesius of Ptolemais

Synesius was a Greek philosopher from Cyrene, a pupil of Hypatia in Alexandria, who became Bishop of Ptolemais in Cyrenaica around 410. His letters and speeches describe the decline of the province, the weakness of its Roman garrison and the raids of desert peoples such as the Austuriani, and are a main source for late Roman North Africa.
