Round City of Baghdad
The Round City of Baghdad, officially named Madinat al-Salam or the City of Peace, was the circular walled capital founded in 762 by the Abbasid caliph al-Mansur on the Tigris. Its concentric walls enclosed the caliphal palace and great mosque at the centre, with gates facing the main routes of the empire. It became the core of Baghdad, which grew into one of the largest and wealthiest cities of the medieval world under the Abbasid Caliphate.
