Salamis Island

Salamis is the largest Greek island in the Saronic Gulf, lying close to the coast of Attica west of Piraeus. Athens and Megara fought over it until Athens took it in the 6th century BCE, traditionally under Solon. In 480 BCE the Greek fleet defeated the Persians in the strait between the island and the mainland.
