Saronic Gulf

Also known as Gulf of Aegina

The Saronic Gulf is an arm of the Aegean Sea between Attica and the Argolid peninsula of the Peloponnese, bounded to the west by the Isthmus of Corinth. Its islands include Salamis, Aegina and Poros, and its shores held Athens' port of Piraeus, Megara and Troezen. In 480 BCE the Greek fleet defeated the Persians in the straits of Salamis at its northern end.
