Saruj
Saruj, now Suruç in south-eastern Turkey, is an ancient town on the plain south-west of Edessa (Şanlıurfa), near the Syrian border. Known in antiquity as Batnae, it was a stage on routes across upper Mesopotamia. In the 11th century it was held by the Numayrid emirs, and from 1101 it belonged to the crusader County of Edessa.
