Saruhan Bey

d. c. 1346 · 14th century

Saruhan Bey was a Turkmen commander who founded the beylik of Saruhan in western Anatolia. In 1313 he took Magnesia, modern Manisa, from the Byzantines and made it his capital in the Hermus valley. He joined the Aydinids in naval raids across the Aegean and was at times an ally of Byzantine factions. The province of Manisa was long known by his name.
