Saturiwa

fl. 1560s · 16th century · Also known as Satouriona

Saturiwa was a chief of the Timucua people near the mouth of the St Johns River in north-eastern Florida in the 1560s. He at first allied with the French Huguenots of Fort Caroline, supplying them with food, but relations deteriorated amid the colonists' hunger and demands. In 1568 his warriors joined Dominique de Gourgues in destroying the Spanish forts that had replaced the French colony.
