Saxo Grammaticus

c. 1160–after 1208 · 12th century

Saxo Grammaticus was a Danish historian and cleric in the service of Archbishop Absalon of Lund. His Latin Gesta Danorum, in sixteen books, traces Danish history from legendary kings to the 1180s and preserves many Scandinavian myths and legends, including the tale of Amleth, the source of Shakespeare's Hamlet. It also describes the Danish destruction of the temple of Svantevit at Arkona in 1168.
