Schoemansdal
Schoemansdal was a Boer settlement in the Soutpansberg in the far north of the Transvaal, founded in 1848 by Andries Hendrik Potgieter's followers and later named after the commandant Stephanus Schoeman. It became a frontier centre of the ivory trade and the seat of the Zoutpansberg republic. Under pressure from Venda resistance led by Makhado, it was abandoned and burned in 1867. Its site is now an open-air museum.
