Venda people

Also known as Vhavenda, VhaVenda

The Venda (VhaVenda) are a Bantu-speaking people of the Soutpansberg mountains and the land north to the Limpopo, in South Africa's Limpopo province and parts of Zimbabwe. Their language is Tshivenda. Under the Singo dynasty from about 1700 they formed a kingdom centred on Dzata, which resisted the Boers until the South African Republic conquered it in 1898. Their traditions include sacred lakes and forests and the domba initiation dance.
