Sea Peoples

c. 1177 BCE · 12th century BCE

The Sea Peoples were migrating confederacies of seafaring raiders who attacked the eastern Mediterranean at the end of the Late Bronze Age. Egyptian records describe Ramesses III defeating them in land and sea battles around 1177 BCE. Accounts of the Hittite Empire identify them as immediate agents of the Bronze Age collapse that destroyed the Hittite state, while New Kingdom Egypt survived in weakened form.
