Also known as Simien

Semien is a mountainous region of northern Ethiopia, north-east of Gondar, containing the Semien Mountains and Ras Dashen, the country's highest peak. In the Era of Princes it was a province ruled by powerful lords, notably Wube Haile Maryam, who also controlled Tigray until his defeat by Kassa Hailu in 1855. The Simien Mountains National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
