Wube Haile Maryam

Wube Haile Maryam was the lord of Semien who also ruled Tigray from 1831 to 1855, making him one of the strongest regional rulers of the Ethiopian Era of Princes. He sought European contacts and firearms to strengthen his position. Defeated by Kassa Hailu at the Battle of Deresge in 1855, he was imprisoned by Kassa, now Emperor Tewodros II, and spent the rest of his life in captivity.
