Shahrisabz
Shahrisabz is a city in southern Uzbekistan, south of Samarkand, in the Kashkadarya valley. Known in earlier times as Kesh, it was a Sogdian principality, and Timur was born nearby in 1336. He built there the vast Ak-Saray palace, whose ruined portal still stands, and the town's historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
