Sharif Ali

15th century · 15th century · Also known as Sultan Berkat

Sharif Ali was the third sultan of Brunei in the traditional list, reigning in the early fifteenth century. Brunei tradition holds that he was a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad who came from Ta'if in Arabia, married into the royal family and succeeded his father-in-law. He is credited with building the first mosque and strengthening Islamic law and the defences of the capital, and is remembered as Sultan Berkat, the 'blessed' sultan.
