d. 1460 · 15th century · Also known as Junayd of Ardabil

Shaykh Junayd was head of the Safavid Sufi order of Ardabil from 1447 to 1460. Driven from Ardabil by a rival, he turned the order into a militant movement, won followers among the Turkmen tribes of Anatolia and married a sister of the Aq Qoyunlu ruler Uzun Hasan. He was killed in battle against the Shirvanshah in 1460; his grandson Ismail I founded the Safavid state.
