Shephelah

The Shephelah is the region of low, rolling hills between the coastal plain and the Judaean mountains in southern Israel; its name means lowland in Hebrew. Fertile and crossed by valleys leading inland, it was a contested borderland between the kingdom of Judah and the Philistines, and fortified cities such as Lachish, Azekah and Beth Shemesh guarded its routes.
