Shepenupet I

8th century BCE · 8th century BCE

Shepenupet I was a daughter of Osorkon III and God's Wife of Amun at Thebes in the 8th century BCE, the first holder of the office to wield wide political power. Under Kushite pressure she adopted Amenirdis I, sister of Piye, as her successor, handing the Kushites a peaceful hold on Thebes. She appears on the chapel of Osiris Heqadjet at Karnak, built by her father and brother.
