Shihab dynasty

Also known as Shihabs, Chehab family

The Shihab dynasty were an Arab family who ruled the emirate of Mount Lebanon under Ottoman suzerainty from 1697 to 1842, succeeding the Ma'n dynasty. Originally Sunni Muslims from Wadi al-Taym, some of them later became Maronite Christians. The emirate reached its height under Bashir Shihab II, whose fall in 1840 was followed by civil strife and the end of the emirate.
