Shuseikan

1850s · 19th century · Also known as Shūseikan

The Shuseikan was an industrial complex built in Kagoshima by Shimazu Nariakira, lord of the Satsuma Domain, in the 1850s. Inspired by Dutch books, it included a reverberatory furnace for casting cannon, a blast furnace, glassworks and workshops, making it one of the first Western-style factories in Japan. Rebuilt after the British bombardment of Kagoshima in 1863, its remains form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution.
