Shimazu Nariakira

1809–1858 · 19th century

Shimazu Nariakira was daimyo of the Satsuma Domain from 1851 to 1858 and one of the most forward-looking lords of late Tokugawa Japan. He built Western-style reverberatory furnaces, shipyards, glassworks and factories at the Shuseikan in Kagoshima, and promoted able retainers such as Saigo Takamori. His modernisation prepared Satsuma for its leading role in the Meiji Restoration.
