Siyam Nikaya

1753 · 18th century

The Siyam Nikaya is the largest order of Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka, founded in 1753 when King Kirti Sri Rajasinha of Kandy invited monks from Ayutthaya, led by Upali Thera, to restore the higher ordination, which had lapsed on the island. Its main chapters are based at Kandy, and it traditionally admits only members of the Goyigama caste.
