Sophie of Brabant

1224–1275 · 13th century

Sophie of Brabant (1224–1275) was a daughter of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and Landgrave Louis IV of Thuringia, and the wife of Duke Henry II of Brabant. When the Ludowingian line died out in 1247 she claimed the Thuringian inheritance for her son Henry and fought the Wettin margrave Henry the Illustrious in the War of the Thuringian Succession. The 1264 settlement gave Hesse to her son, Henry I, the first Landgrave of Hesse.
