Soteria

from c. 278 BCE · 3rd century BCE

The Soteria was a festival at Delphi founded after the defence of the sanctuary against the Gauls of Brennus in 279 BCE, honouring Zeus Soter and Apollo for the city's deliverance. Controlled by the Aetolian League, which had led the defence, it was reorganised in the mid-third century BCE as a panhellenic festival with musical and athletic contests.
