SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse

1897–1914 · 19th century · Also known as Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse

SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse was a transatlantic liner of Norddeutscher Lloyd, built at Stettin and launched in 1897. The first liner with four funnels, she won the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing in 1897, ending British dominance of the record. Converted into an auxiliary cruiser in 1914, she was sunk off West Africa in August of that year.
