Starocherkasskaya
Starocherkasskaya is a Cossack village on the lower Don in Rostov oblast, Russia, known until 1805 as Cherkassk. From the mid-17th century it was the capital of the Don Cossack Host, built on an island exposed to spring floods. After repeated flooding the capital was moved to Novocherkassk in 1805; the village keeps its Baroque Resurrection Cathedral, built in 1706–1719.
