Sven Hedin

1865–1952 · 20th century

Sven Hedin was a Swedish geographer and explorer who made several expeditions through Central Asia and Tibet between the 1890s and the 1930s. In 1900 he found the ruins of the ancient city of Loulan near Lop Nur, and he mapped large parts of the Taklamakan Desert and the Trans-Himalaya. His later sympathy for Nazi Germany damaged his reputation.
