Aurel Stein

1862–1943 · 20th century · Also known as Sir Marc Aurel Stein

Aurel Stein was a Hungarian-born British archaeologist and explorer who led four expeditions to Central Asia between 1900 and 1930. He excavated sites along the southern Silk Road, including Niya, Loulan and Dunhuang, where he acquired thousands of manuscripts, among them the Diamond Sutra, the oldest dated printed book. His finds, now mainly in the British Museum and British Library, transformed the study of the ancient Tarim Basin.
