Tahmasp I

1514–1576 · 16th century · Also known as Shah Tahmasp I, Shah Tahmasp

Tahmasp I was the second shah of Safavid Iran, ruling from 1524 to 1576 after succeeding his father Ismail I as a boy. He survived years of Qizilbash factional strife, fended off repeated Ottoman invasions and agreed the Peace of Amasya with Suleiman the Magnificent in 1555, which left Iraq to the Ottomans. He moved the capital from Tabriz to Qazvin and was a great patron of manuscript painting.
