Tanganyika Rifles

1961–1964 · 20th century

The Tanganyika Rifles was the army of newly independent Tanganyika, formed from battalions of the British colonial King's African Rifles. In January 1964 its soldiers mutinied over pay and the slow replacement of their British officers by Africans, and President Julius Nyerere had to ask Britain to send Royal Marines to disarm them. The army was then disbanded and replaced by the Tanzania People's Defence Force.
