Royal Marines

1664 · 17th century

The Royal Marines are the amphibious infantry of the British Royal Navy, whose origins go back to a regiment raised for sea service in 1664. They have fought in most British wars, from the capture of Gibraltar in 1704 to the Falklands War. In January 1964 Royal Marine commandos were called in by Julius Nyerere to disarm the mutinous Tanganyika Rifles.
