Taprobane

Taprobane was the ancient Greek and Roman name for Sri Lanka, derived from Tambapanni, the name of the first Sinhalese settlement. Greek writers learned of the island after the campaigns of Alexander the Great, and it was described by Megasthenes, Pliny the Elder and Ptolemy, whose map greatly exaggerated its size. The name stayed in use in European geography until the early modern period.
