Dipavamsa

c. 4th century · 4th century

The Dipavamsa, the "Chronicle of the Island", is the oldest surviving historical chronicle of Sri Lanka, written in Pali probably in the 4th century CE. It recounts the legendary visits of the Buddha to the island, the arrival of Prince Vijaya and the history of its kings and of Buddhism there up to the reign of Mahasena. It was a main source for the later and more polished Mahavamsa.
