Targowica Confederation

1792 · 18th century

The Targowica Confederation was an alliance of Polish-Lithuanian magnates formed in 1792 to overturn the reformist Constitution of 3 May 1791. Backed by Catherine the Great, it invited Russian military intervention. Accounts of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth describe it as a confederation of nobles who preferred foreign domination to the loss of their privileges, paving the way for the Second Partition of 1793.
