Taygetus
Taygetus is the highest mountain range of the Peloponnese in Greece, rising to 2,404 metres at Profitis Ilias. It runs north to south between Laconia and Messenia and towers over the site of ancient Sparta to the west. The range was the barrier that Spartan armies crossed to conquer Messenia, and later writers told how Spartans exposed weak infants in a chasm on its slopes.
