The Fountain of Bakhchisaray

1824 · 19th century

The Fountain of Bakhchisaray is a narrative poem by Alexander Pushkin, written in 1821–1823 and published in 1824. Inspired by his visit to the Khan's Palace at Bakhchysarai and its fountain, it tells of the khan Giray, his jealous wife Zarema and the captive Polish princess Maria. It was hugely popular and inspired a ballet by Boris Asafyev in 1934.
