Tiele

5th–7th century · 5th century

The Tiele were a confederation of Turkic-speaking tribes of the Mongolian steppe and Central Asia recorded in Chinese sources from the 5th to the 7th century, and linked to the earlier Gaoche ('High Carts'). Subject in turn to the Rouran and the Göktürks, tribes among them such as the Xueyantuo and the Uyghurs rebelled and founded their own khaganates. The Uyghurs, the most successful, built the Uyghur Khaganate in 744.
