Transcaspian Oblast
The Transcaspian Oblast was a province of the Russian Empire east of the Caspian Sea, roughly corresponding to modern Turkmenistan, formed after the conquest of the Turkmen in 1881 and enlarged by the annexation of Merv in 1884. Its capital was Ashgabat, and the Trans-Caspian railway crossed it from Krasnovodsk. In 1918–1919 it was held by an anti-Bolshevik government, and in 1924 it became the core of the Turkmen SSR.
