Trinh Kiem

1503–1570 · 16th century · Also known as Trịnh Kiểm

Trinh Kiem was a Vietnamese general and founder of the power of the Trinh lords. Son-in-law of the Le loyalist leader Nguyen Kim, he took command of the Later Le restoration forces after Nguyen Kim's death in 1545 and fought the Mac dynasty from Thanh Hoa, becoming the real ruler behind the Le emperors. His rivalry with Nguyen Kim's son Nguyen Hoang began the Trinh–Nguyen division of Vietnam.
