Tripartite Pact

1940 · 20th century · Also known as Berlin Pact · Part of the Second World War

The Tripartite Pact was signed in Berlin on 27 September 1940 by Germany, Italy and Japan, who pledged to assist one another if attacked by a power not yet in the war, chiefly aimed at the United States. Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Bulgaria joined, and Yugoslavia signed on 25 March 1941. Two days later a military coup in Belgrade overthrew the Yugoslav government, and Germany invaded the country in April.
