Tunnel of Eupalinos
The Tunnel of Eupalinos is an aqueduct tunnel 1,036 metres long cut through Mount Kastro on Samos in the sixth century BCE, under the tyrant Polycrates. Dug from both ends at once under the engineer Eupalinos of Megara, it carried water to the ancient city on the site of modern Pythagoreio. It is the second known tunnel excavated from both ends and the first planned by geometry, and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
