Tutankhamun

c. 1342–1323 BCE · 14th century BCE · Also known as Tutankhamen, Tutankhaten, King Tut

Tutankhamun was a pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty of ancient Egypt who ruled c. 1332–1323 BCE and died at about the age of 19. Born Tutankhaten in the reign of Akhenaten, he restored the traditional religion after Atenism, restoring the cult of Amun at Thebes, changing his name and moving the court from Amarna back to Memphis. DNA testing identified his father as the mummy from tomb KV55, thought to be Akhenaten or Smenkhkare. As his royal tomb was unfinished, he was buried in a small non-royal tomb, which excavators led by Howard Carter found in 1922 with much of its contents, over 5,000 artifacts and the king's undisturbed mummy; the discovery renewed public interest in ancient Egypt.
