Ua Fáeláin

Also known as Ó Faoláin

The Ua Fáeláin were the ruling family of the Déisi of Munster, in what is now County Waterford and south Tipperary, in the 11th and 12th centuries. They took their name from an ancestor called Fáelán. Their kingdom was overrun when the Anglo-Normans took Waterford in 1170, and their name survives in the modern surnames Phelan and Whelan.
