Udai Singh II

1522–1572 · 16th century · Also known as Udai Singh II of Mewar

Udai Singh II was Maharana of Mewar until his death in 1572 and the founder of the city of Udaipur in 1559. A son of Rana Sanga, he escaped as a child from the usurper Banvir, who had killed his brother Vikramaditya, and later won back the throne. When Akbar besieged and took Chittor in 1567–1568, he withdrew to the hills, and Udaipur became Mewar's new capital. His son Maharana Pratap continued the resistance to the Mughals.
