Ulugh Beg Observatory

Also known as Samarkand Observatory

The Ulugh Beg Observatory was an astronomical observatory built in Samarkand in the 1420s by the Timurid ruler Ulugh Beg. Its huge meridian arc allowed precise measurements, and the astronomers who worked there produced a star catalogue and astronomical tables. Accounts of the Timurid Empire present it as a high point of Timurid scientific patronage.
