Vapheio

c. 1500 BCE · 16th century BCE · Also known as Vaphio

Vapheio is a site in Laconia, south of Sparta, known for a Mycenaean tholos tomb excavated by Christos Tsountas in 1888. An unplundered pit in the tomb held rich grave goods, above all the two Vapheio Cups, gold cups of about 1500 BCE decorated with scenes of bull-catching. They are in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
