Västgötalagen

c. 1220 · 13th century · Also known as Västgöta Law

The Västgötalagen, or Västgöta Law, is the provincial law of Västergötland in Sweden. Its older version, probably written down in the 1220s and surviving in a manuscript of about 1280, is the oldest Swedish provincial law and the oldest substantial text written in Swedish in the Latin alphabet. It records the rights of the province's assembly and the customs of a society still largely independent of royal law.
