The Volga Tatars are a Turkic people of the middle Volga and Ural regions of Russia, most of whom live in Tatarstan and neighbouring republics; they are the largest group of Tatars and are mainly Sunni Muslims. Their language belongs to the Kipchak branch of Turkic. They regard both the Volga Bulgars and the Kipchak-speaking population of the Golden Horde and the Khanate of Kazan as their ancestors.
